Health experts say they can’t be tracked long-term because they affect productivity

Most fad diets promise unrealistic weight loss and are neither based on optimal nutrition nor promoting health, said Dr Baljinder Singh, head of the emergency department at Thumbay University Hospital. “Most of these diets result in weight loss, but it’s really hard to tell if it’s fat or muscle loss. Once you stop dieting, weight gain is imminent,” said Dr. Singh.

In recent times, diets such as low carb diet, Keto diet, juice diet, etc. have become very popular, while some have also turned to metabolism boosting pills or pills. burning fat to get rid of fat. “A fad diet is a plan that promotes results such as rapid weight loss without proper scientific evidence to support its claims. Specifically in the UAE, most people follow the Keto Diet, the detox diet , the Atkins diet, the fruit-only diet, the gluten-free diet, etc.,” Dr. Singh said.

Doctors say these diets are difficult to follow after the initial enthusiasm. “Most fad diets are difficult to follow long-term and can affect health and complicate pre-existing medical conditions,” said Juliot Vinolia Rajarathinam, clinical dietitian and consultant nutritionist at Medeor Hospital in Dubai.

She said they also affect energy levels and productivity. “These diets lead to loss of muscle mass and slow metabolism, signaling the body to go into fat-storage mode,” Vinolia says.

Highlighting the risk of nutritional deficiency, particularly of iron, vitamin D and calcium, Viniola said vitamins are crucial for hormonal function and general health. “It can cause hypothyroidism, PCOD, gallstones, kidney stones, and insulin insensitivity,” Vinolia added.

Dr Singh said depriving yourself of certain nutrients can lead to side effects such as dehydration, bad breath, fatigue, hair loss, intestinal upset, raised uric acid and kidney problems, as well as specific nutritional deficiencies.

Experts say that more than any diet, you need to follow a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and physical activity. “The benefits of any short diet never last and always come with health risks,” Dr. Singh said.

“The approach should be to consume meals in a timely manner – especially dinner early – avoid overeating and abstain from sugar and processed foods. water throughout the day while getting at least 30 minutes of exercise three times a week,” he added.

Experts say eating meals at regular intervals is the first step to overcoming overeating and ensuring better digestion and health. “As well as being mindful of stress and social eating, self-education about health and diet can help keep individuals motivated,” Dr. Singh said.

“Meal planning is also important for a healthy lifestyle, which includes making a grocery list ahead of time and going through it before you shop and drop, or limiting unhealthy items such as processed foods, carbonated drinks, and foods that are sugary or high in salt.

“Finally, eating less in restaurants is crucial for maintaining weight and staying healthy,” Dr. Singh added.

Vinolia says our eating habits are controlled by three factors.

1. Our brain

Stress, mood swings and sleep deprivation can reduce the feel-good chemicals serotonin, melatonin and dopamine in our brain. We have to keep in mind that sugar greatly affects this chemical release and makes us more dependent on sugar than on real life emotions. Avoid gorging yourself on sugar to relieve stress – instead choose hot herbal teas and unsweetened cocoa or dark chocolates or even more natural foods like nuts.

2. The intestine

Whenever we are hungry or want to eat, we must first ask ourselves if it is hunger, craving or just thirst. We often confuse hunger with thirst and end up snacking. The best thing to do is to drink hot or cold water first to avoid unnecessary snacking between meals.

3. Spirit

A healthy, stress-free mind can be ensured by maintaining an essential work-life balance with adequate sleep and meditation exercises or by engaging in hobbies that trigger happiness-boosting hormones and help the brain to better understand the signals of the body and to maintain its general well-being.
