Residents relieved as the city of NJ could ease restrictions on dog parks

If you don’t have a pet or maybe you don’t follow all the latest dog news, there has been a ton of controversy regarding dogs in New Jersey parks recently.

At Fanwood, rules have been created to keep dogs out of the parks at all times. This is due to ordinance 05-21-R which prohibits any kind of dog in several parks in the town.

Many residents have been irritated by this rule because they feel that their entire family (and they consider their pets to be part of their family), including pets, should enjoy any property they pay taxes on. So that would include their dogs.

Additionally, the park exists as a safer walking route in certain areas of the city where sidewalks do not exist and therefore animals must be walked on the streets. If they could enter the park even on a leash, it would make just walking a dog much easier and safer.

Council members are certainly willing to re-evaluate this situation, as Fanwood is a close-knit town and this issue is important to countless residents. There will be a public hearing next month which will hopefully allow the dogs to return to the parks.

Hopes seem quite high as council members appear to be in favor of the dogs from a few meetings that have taken place. Not only would this new rule eliminate late-night 911 calls from those who find themselves in the park with a dog, it would make walking in Fanwood, where only 40% of streets have sidewalks, much safer.
