What are chocolate buckeyes made of?
Essentially, chocolate buckeyes are balls of peanut butter dipped in delicious chocolate. A small circle of peanut butter is left uncovered, giving the chestnuts their distinctive appearance. Where do chocolate buckeyes come from?
Chocolate buckeyes themselves are a simple snack, but there’s a surprisingly complex story behind the name. You may know Ohio as the home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, but as chocolate lovers, we know it as the home of chocolate buckeyes. This tasty treat originated in the Midwestern United States and is named after the humble glabrous aesculus, or Ohio buckeye tree, which is the state tree of Ohio.
Buckeye nuts are quite similar to horse chestnuts. The dark nut with a small white spot looks like a shiny deer’s eye, which is why Native Americans living in the area called them “hetuck”, which means “deer’s eyes”. Since then, the State of Ohio has appropriated the identity of the horse chestnut tree. Ohio State University uses the name for its sports teams, and it may be used as a slang term for people living in Ohio. It’s so iconic, in fact, that the state is sometimes called the “Buckeye State”!
The buckeye candy also has its own story to tell. the invention of daisies is attributed to Gail Tabor in the 1960s, when she dipped peanut butter balls in chocolate and noticed they looked like buckeye nuts. Tabor buckeyes became a tradition for the annual Ohio State-Michigan game, and since then they have become something of the state’s unofficial candy.
How to make chocolate buckeyes

And there’s no baking necessary – just a freezer and a chocolate melting method. Our recipe should make about 40 buckeyes, but feel free to adjust the amounts if you want more or less. You can store them in the refrigerator for several weeks. Alternatively, wrap them tightly and store them in the freezer for several months and they’ll still be good to go.
475g smooth peanut butter
115g butter (molded)
1 tsp vanilla extract
400g icing sugar
340g dark chocolate
First, mix the peanut butter and softened butter in a bowl, then add the vanilla extract.
Sift the icing sugar into the bowl and mix well to create a paste.
Take tablespoon-sized pieces of dough and shape them into balls by rolling them in your hands.
Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
Chill them in the freezer for 20 to 30 minutes, then take them out and prick each one with a toothpick.
Melt the chocolate in a bowl.
Using the toothpick, dip each peanut butter ball into the chocolate. To give your buckeyes their distinctive appearance, make sure a round spot of peanut butter is always visible on one side.
Return to baking sheet and remove toothpick. You can smooth the toothpick mark with your finger for a cleaner look.
Leave the buckeyes in the refrigerator for the chocolate to harden before serving.
What type of chocolate is best for chocolate buckeyes?
Although ultimately it comes down to personal preference, our recommendation is high quality dark chocolate. The deep, decadent flavor of dark chocolate contrasts magically with peanut butter. The recipe calls for a fair amount of icing sugar, but darker chocolate can work with the peanut butter to keep your candy from becoming too much soft. You can also choose unsweetened peanut butter for this recipe.
